What exactly is coaching?
Put simply, coaching is a powerful alliance between 2 people that is:
• Goal-oriented
• Results-focused
• Based on integrity, accountability and respect
• Based on a belief in human potential
• About enabling you to bridge the gap between where
you are now and where you want to be.
Is coaching like therapy?
The truth is that coaching and therapy do share common features. Some of the core skills are very alike, such the need for as active listening, discerning when to ask the challenging or insightful question, and the need to establish a strong relationship of trust.
Because they have features in common, there can sometimes be a blurring of boundaries between coaching and therapy. There may be times in coaching, for example, when a coach will want to focus on a client's past -if the need arises- or guide a person to the understanding that it's their past thoughts and emotional reactions that have led to beliefs which shape their current view of reality.
In general the main thrust of coaching is to focus on the present and the future, on the generation of options and choices in order to improve overall performance. Coaching tends to be fairly short-term and solution-focused, whereas therapy may involve more legitimate in-depth exploration of a client's life.
